(1) ANDREW TURNBULL M.D. was of Scotch descent and the founder of
the American Branch of the TURNBULL family. A graduate of
Edinburgh University, he then studied medicine in Paris, France.
where he met the lady who became his wife (Gracia Maria Rubini),
a Greek by birth, whose family came from Aleppo.3 Gracia Maria
Rubini had been educated in Paris, and was famous for her great
beauty, beside being the most accomplished and an excellent wife
and mother. She was much noticed at court by Queen Charlotte, as
she spoke German, which few ladies did in England at that time.
She was always a firm adherent of the Greek Orthodox Church, in
whose ritual she had been born and bred, though her descendants
have all belonged to the Church of England (later on, her
descendants converted into other religions).
Dr. Turnbull, the ancestor, is mentioned by the Abbe Raynal in his "History of the East and West Indies" with encomium as "Le Sage Turnbull". About 1757 he immigrated to America having received a grant from the British Government entitling him to large tracks in Florida (later known as new Smyrna Beach), where he lived and where most of his children were born. Before the American war of Independence, Florida was a constant bone of contention between France, Spain and England. Each struggled for supremacy in turn. Spain becoming finally Dominant, Dr. Andrew Turnbull, who held his claim under British rights, was dispossessed and forced to look for home and lands elsewhere, and settled in Charleston, South Carolina, where he died. Of his sons: 1-2 Nichol Turnbull Rubini was a planter on the Savannah. 1-9 William Duncan Turnbull Rubini was an East India Captain, in the county trade from India to China. 1-10 Robert James Turnbull Rubini lived in Charleston. He was a great politician, an eloquent speaker, and much esteemed for the services he rendered to his State, which erected a handsome monument to him when he died. He married Three times: First Miss Gervais of a Huguenot family; second he married Miss Lightfoot and thirdly he married Miss McCall. Of William Duncan Turnbull Rubini's children 1-9-1 William Percy Turnbull died of Sunstroke in Sumatra. 1-9-2 Robert Harvey was killed in action in Burma. 1-9-3 Elliott Bay Turnbull went from England to Mexico with a Mining Company to work mines in the State of Oaxaca, and there he met the Lady who afterwards became his wife, Bernarda Mejia, sister of General Ignacio Mejia (see the story of his life in other papers). The General was Minister of War under President Don Benito Juarez and later became Minister of War under President Sebastian Lerdo de Tejada. 1-9-5 Alfred Turnbull entered the H.B.S. Co. Civil Service and was Judge of a District, when he was prematurely cut off by cholera. 1-9-4 Sydney Turnbull entered the H.E.I.C's Service in India, and was mortally wounded at the siege and capture of Jhansi, in the Central India Campaign under Sir Hugh Rose. He was condecorated for gallant conduct in the operation against the Fort of Rathgur. Of 1-9-3 Elliottt Bay Turnbull children: 1-9-3-2 Roberto Francisco (Kanky) Xavier Ignacio Turnbull, the eldest (as his brother 1-9-3-1 Edward Turnbull who died at infancy), was a miner and metallurgist for many years in Pachuca and Atotonilco el Chico, afterwards, a contractor on the Central Railroad, having constructed the Branch from Irapuato to Guadalajara and a portion from Aguascalientes to San Luis Potosi. He finally settled in Puebla and married his brother's 1-9-3-9 Carlos Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuseno Turnbull Mejia widow with six children. This was a perfectly legal marriage in Mexico. 1-9-3-9 Carlos Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuseno Turnbull Mejia had 6 children: 1-9-3-9-1 Bernarda Katherine TURNBULL WRIGLEY who died at infancy. 1-9-3-9-2 Elliott Bay TURNBULL WRIGLEY born18-II-1879 married Annie Barnard WATTS daughter of a well known Doctor in San Antonio. They had 3 sons. Elliott, Charles and William. 1-9-3-9-3 Eleanor TURNBULL WRIGLEY born in Puebla, Mexico 21-VIII-1880 Married in the Methodist Church to Mr. Geoffrey Holt Hamer fron Helensburgh, Scotland. He came to Mexico with his father to start a linnen factory "La Linera". 1-9-3-9-4 Margaret Josephine TURNBULL WRIGLEY born in Puebla 1882. There is no birth certificate for her or her sister even if the President of Mexico Benito Juarez had already given the order for the Civil Registry to start, but only the men were being registered in that time. She was married in the Hacienda Capulac in 1901, her husband Guillermo Francisco ZAPATA BRETON later on became the lover of ___________ del Valle de Serdan wife of Aquiles Serdán |

28th of November 1886, He anyway was a British subject. He was
taken in 1897 to Mitchells school in Billerica, Massachusets.

(born 21 Sept. 1935, she is responsible for adding the dates in the family tree). Walter Turnbull was a in railroad contruction in Mexico and South America 1901-1914. Went with the the Royal Welsh Fusiliers to England during World War I and was sent to Belgium. Stayed in England for a year and returned to America by ship to visit his sister Margaret Joshephine who was very sick. During the voyage from New York to Veracruz, Mexico he met his future wife Concepcion Aguirre Cinta Wasem. Fruit inspector United Fruit Co., Honduras, 1914-17, general manager and vice president tropical banana divs., La Lima Honduras, since 1930; manager Cuyamel Fruit Co., Honduras, 1921-30. 1-9-3-9-3-5 Herbert George HAMER TURNBULL lives in Sun City, Arizona. Married Lola Margaret Catherine PITTS he lived in Honduras, and in Panama where he worked for the United Fruit Co.. He also was a very loved fireman volunteer. 1-9-3-9-3-4 Jessie Eleanor HAMER TURNBULL lives in Terra Haute, Indiana. 1-9-3-9-3-2 Reginald Holt HAMER TURNBULL married Mildred Maxwell, he lived in Costa Rica, Manager of United Fruit Co. in San Jose, Costa Rica. Died in a plane crash, his children 1-9-3-9-3-2-1 Walter Maxwell HAMER MAXWELL lives in Florida, Married Sue Trafton. He worked many years in Spain. Their daughter 1-9-3-9-3-2-1-1 Kimberley Ann HAMER TRAFTON lives in Washington working for the State of Florida, later on for National Geographic also in Washington. Married Carl E. HULSE and had a son 1-9-3-9-3-2-1-1-1 Nicholas Hamer HULSE HAMER a ninth generation. Reggie's son 1-9-3-9-3-2-2 Geoffrey Holt HAMER MAXWELL died in Guatemala. 1-9-3-2-1 Robert Bernard Elliott TurnbullKanky's son and, 1-9-3-2-2 Arthur Francis Xavier Turnbull went to England and entered the Royal Flying Cors against Germany and her Allies in World War I. Arthur was killed in an accident flying before being sent to the Front. He is buried in Turo, England. 1-9-3-2-1 Robert Bernard Elliott Turnbull severely wounded twice. Married Miss Muriel Dowsing in England and returned to Mexico, where he became British Vice Council. He worked for Watson and Phillips. He had four children. The first daughter 1-9-3-2-1-1 Patricia Muriel Turnbull died in England at infancy. The two sons in World War II went into the Royal Air Force in England, and both died the day after the War ended, killed by two bombs that were in their respective planes. The fourth daughter 1-9-3-2-1-4 Morwena Turnbull married Sherwood Brash who worked for the American Government in California in a Hush-Hush Job. The daughter of 1-9-3 Elliott Bay TURNBULL PERCY, Miss 1-9-3-3 Bernarda Maria Eliza Turnbull married Thomas Evans Lees,3 returned to England and had 7 children. Most of her descendants are in England, but her great-grandson1-9-3-3-7-1-1 Aubrey Lawrence PARKE PHIPPS, first was in the Fidji Islans and then in Australia in the University of Camberra. The fourth daughter: 1-9-3-4 Eliza Turnbull died without descendants. The fifth son 1-9-3-5 Guillermo Rafael Juan de Dios Turnbull married Josefa Inocencia Breton y Gomez, they had six children whose descendants live in the State of Puebla and in the State of Tlaxcala. The second son 1-9-3-5-2 Guillermo Enrique Gumersindo Turnbull died soon after his wife. He left four children. Their eldest daughter Maria de la Concepcion Bernarda (Baby) Turnbull Marin, worked for the Nestle Co. for many years in Mexico City. |
